Tron: Ares 2025 movie review

 Tron: Ares

As of late September 2025,

Tron: Ares has not been released and therefore does not have full, public reviews. However, preview screenings and soundtrack releases have generated early buzz and critical commentary. The film, which features a new AI program entering the human world, is scheduled for release on October 10, 2025.

Early reception

The first footage shown at CinemaCon 2025 drew a positive response, with critics and commentators noting the striking visuals of the digital world invading the real world. This was seen by some as a fresh and exciting take that moves the franchise forward instead of repeating the formula of past films.

However, some fans have expressed apprehension about the shift in story focus. In contrast to earlier films that followed a human entering the Grid, Ares is centered on an AI program, played by Jared Leto, journeying into the real world. Questions have been raised about whether this new angle will connect with audiences in the same way as the human-focused narratives of Tron and Tron: Legacy

Soundtrack review

The film's score, composed by Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), has received positive early reviews, with critics calling it a "biodigital triumph".

·        A new sound for Tron: The industrial rock sound of Nine Inch Nails is a change from the electronic scores of Wendy Carlos and Daft Punk on previous films. Director Joachim Rønning described the music as fitting the film's "grittier, more industrial" atmosphere.

·        Not just a score: The soundtrack also functions as a standalone Nine Inch Nails album, featuring four vocal tracks with Trent Reznor.

Story and thematic changes

Tron: Ares is a sequel to Tron: Legacy but focuses on a new story rather than resolving the cliffhanger from the previous film.

·        AI in the real world: The new narrative is seen as highly relevant given current discussions around emerging AI technology. Creator Steven Lisberger called it a metaphor for technology outpacing human imagination.

·        PG-13 rating: The film is the first in the franchise to be rated PG-13, a step up from the PG ratings of its predecessors. This indicates more intense action and potentially darker content.

Cast and characters

·        Jared Leto stars as Ares, an AI program with ambitions of becoming a "real boy".

·        The film features a new ensemble cast including Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Gillian Anderson.

·        Jeff Bridges returns to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn. However, according to Director Rønning, no other cast members from Legacy were brought back to avoid cheap fan service.
